Lincoln rallies for 1-1 draw with North in gritty conference match

Ashley Flores-Garcia delivered the equalizer in the 75th minute, and Des Moines Lincoln battled North to a 1-1 draw Tuesday night in a highly competitive conference match at Lincoln High School. In difficult conditions, the Rails found their breakthrough on a second-half counterattack that led to a penalty in the box, and Flores-Garcia made it count to pull the teams even.

North grabbed the early advantage on a penalty kick in the final 20 minutes of the first half and carried that 1-0 lead into halftime. The match had a little bit of everything after that, pressure, physical play and a steady stream of chances, with Lincoln forced to stay organized while waiting for the right moment to strike back.

That moment came late. Lincoln turned defense into attack in the second half, springing a dangerous counter that put North under pressure and produced the foul in the area. Flores-Garcia stepped up in the 75th minute and buried the penalty to level the score at 1-1, a reward for a team that kept pushing despite the weather and the one-goal deficit.

The draw was also preserved by standout work in goal. Katie Strong and Yazzlin Lucero were phenomenal, combining to save 13 shots and keeping Lincoln within reach throughout the night. Their play was especially important after North's first-half goal, as each save gave the Rails another chance to find the equalizer.

In the end, Lincoln came away with a hard-earned result against a tough conference opponent. The Rails showed patience, resilience and composure in a match that easily could have slipped away after the first-half penalty. Instead, they answered with one decisive late moment and a defensive effort strong enough to make sure it stood.
