Des Moines Lincoln takes a big step into a demanding three-game week Tuesday night when the No. 9 Rails host Ames in a conference matchup that carries plenty of weight. Lincoln enters at 4-1-2 and fresh off a 6-0 win over Des Moines East, while the Little Cyclones arrive at 3-3-3 with a recent edge in the series after winning the last three meetings. For a Lincoln team that just cracked the IHSAA Class 4A rankings, this one feels significant right away. A win would keep the Rails rolling and strengthen their standing with the committee.

That is part of what makes this matchup so interesting. Lincoln has momentum, but coach Joe Sithonnorath knows Ames has regularly been a difficult opponent. The Rails have shown sharp form lately, especially in attack, and Wednesday gives them a chance to prove that the ranking beside their name is more than just a good week. Can Lincoln turn a strong homestand into a statement result? Against a team that has caused problems in recent seasons, that is the challenge in front of them.

The Rails will look to several key pieces to set the tone. Senior Brandon Hernandez-Contreras has emerged as one of the team leaders in points and has been finishing chances like a true goal poacher. Junior Xavier Keomany gives Lincoln another major threat because of his playmaking ability, the kind that can open space and unlock chances before defenses are ready. Senior captain Abel Molina-Ordaz has also been in excellent form over the last four matches, giving the attack another reliable option as Lincoln tries to keep pressure on Ames from the start.

In the middle of the field, junior Meva Dacoury may be just as important to the story. His steady defensive work and smart decision-making have helped anchor the Rails in midfield, and that area could decide the match. If Lincoln can control possession, win second balls and keep Ames from getting comfortable through the center, the attack should have room to work. If not, the Little Cyclones have enough history in this matchup to make the night uncomfortable.

For Lincoln, Tuesday is about more than one result. It is a chance to extend the team’s winning ways, protect home field and start a difficult week with a result that matters in the rankings race. The Rails have the confidence of a team on the rise. Now they get a measuring-stick match against an opponent that has had their number, and that usually makes for a pretty good night of soccer.
