Des Moines Lincoln turned a tight match into a convincing one Friday night, using a burst of second-half offense to pull away for a 4-1 road win over Council Bluffs Jefferson. The decisive moment came just after halftime, when the Rails found the first goal of the second half and opened the door to the flurry that followed.
Lincoln controlled possession for most of the night at Council Bluffs Jefferson and steadily dictated the pace. After a competitive opening half, the Rails raised their level coming out of the break and scored three times in the second half to create separation. Ashley Flores-Garcia, Ana Moguel, Gbomi Kayode and Mia Smith each scored for Lincoln, giving the visitors a balanced attack and the finishing touch on a strong all-around performance.
That attacking success was built on teamwork as much as finishing. Lincoln consistently created chances for one another, and the crisp movement in the final third paid off once the second-half breakthrough arrived. Coach Tyger Nieters said he was beyond pleased with the girls' effort, their teamwork in creating chances for each other and their attention to detail, all of which showed up as the match opened in Lincoln's favor.
The Rails were just as sharp on the other end. Lincoln's back line delivered one of its best outings of the season, limiting Council Bluffs Jefferson to just one shot on goal. That defensive effort kept pressure on the home side all night and allowed Lincoln to stay aggressive, knowing the back line was winning challenges and cutting off dangerous opportunities before they developed.
On a clear, cool evening in Council Bluffs, Lincoln put together the kind of road performance that can build confidence. The Rails combined possession, defensive discipline and timely finishing, then turned a close match into a 4-1 statement win once the second half began to tilt their way.
The Rails improve to 3-4-1 and return to action Tuesday night at Dowling.
