Detroit Cristo Rey’s Lady Wolves battled through difficult circumstances Wednesday night and never stopped competing in an 8-1 loss to Academy of the Sacred Heart High School. Playing a player down for the entire match, the Wolves still found a bright moment in the attack when Sofia Garcia finished off an assist from Amanda Garcia for the team’s goal.

That finish stood out as a reward for a team that continued to push forward despite the numbers disadvantage. Amanda Garcia helped create the chance with a well-timed setup, and the Wolves kept looking for opportunities even as Sacred Heart applied steady pressure. The result did not swing Detroit Cristo Rey’s way, but the team’s confidence and resilience showed throughout the match.

A major part of that effort came through the midfield, where freshmen Jocelyn Zarate and Jocelyn Leon were instrumental in building the attack. Both players controlled possession, connected passes and helped the Wolves move into dangerous areas, offering another encouraging sign for a varsity roster loaded with freshmen. Their work in the middle gave Detroit Cristo Rey stretches of composure and purpose against a tough opponent.

In goal, freshman Kaidence Woods delivered one of the strongest individual performances of the night with eight saves. Woods was repeatedly called into action and responded with poise, helping the Wolves stay organized under pressure. Defensively, that kind of effort reflected the team’s determination to keep battling from start to finish, even in a demanding environment.

The scoreboard favored Sacred Heart, but the bigger takeaway for the Lady Wolves was the progress on display. With so many freshmen gaining varsity experience, Detroit Cristo Rey showed growth, confidence and a better understanding of what it takes to compete at this level. Wednesday’s match was a tough test, but it also offered another clear glimpse of a young Wolves team with a bright future.
