Bulldogs clinch victory in tense Frontier Conference Volleyball Tournament quarterfinals

HAVRE, Mont. - In a thrilling series of sets, the third-seeded Montana Western came out on top against sixth-seeded Rocky Mountain the Frontier Conference Volleyball Tournament's quarterfinals round at Armory Gym. The match, which extended to five competitive sets, saw the Bulldogs pulling off a hard-fought 3-2 victory. Set scores were 18-25, 25-18, 25-19, 24-26, and 15-9. The contest kicked off with Rocky Mountain taking the lead in the first set, but Montana Western bounced back to secure wins in the second and third sets. The fourth set was especially intense, featuring 11 ties and ultimately going to Rocky Mountain. However, Montana Western clinched the win with a decisive 15-9 score in the final game, influenced by some critical errors from Rocky Mountain in key moments. Offensively, the Bulldogs (21-8 overall record, No. 19 ranked in the final NAIA Women's Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 national poll) were led by standout performances from Jazi Smith, who scored 21 points through a mix of attacks and serves, and Dani Brown who contributed 13.5 points. Taylor Petersen played a major role as well, providing 35 set assists. On the defensive front, Kelsey Goddard impressed with 29 digs, while Peyton Vogl added crucial blocks to Montana Western's defensive effort. The victory sets the stage for Montana Western's next challenge, as they prepare to face No. 2 seed Montana Tech (19-9 overall record, No.17 in the national poll) later tonight at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs' resilience and strategic gameplay bode well as they continue their pursuit of the championship. Rocky Mountain ends their season at 13-19 overall record. Top-seed Providence (23-6 overall record, No. 13 in the NAIA national poll) faces No. 5 seed MSU-Northern Friday night (tonight) at 5 p.m.
