Frontier Conference Basketball Championships to stay in Butte Through 2029

Nick Huntimer | Frontier Conference | Jul 27, 2026

BUTTE, Mont. (July 27, 2026) - The Frontier Conference Women’s and Men’s Basketball Championships will remain at the Butte Civic Center through the 2028-29 season. The extension keeps our postseason basketball championships in Butte for the next three conference tournaments.

Montana Tech will continue serving as the championship host in collaboration with the Butte Civic Center. Their work, along with the support of the Butte community, has helped establish the tournaments as premier NAIA postseason events for student-athletes, coaches, officials and fans.

“We are incredibly grateful for the confidence our Frontier Conference colleagues have placed in Montana Tech and the Butte community by extending our opportunity to host the conference basketball championships,” Montana Tech Athletics Director Matt Stepan said. “To be entrusted with four consecutive tournaments is both humbling and exciting. This recognition belongs to an entire community that has embraced the event and helped create an exceptional championship experience for our student-athletes, coaches, officials, and fans.”

The championships will continue to play an important role in determining the conference’s two automatic bids to the NAIA national tournament. The regular-season champion will receive the first berth, while the Frontier Conference tournament champion will earn the second. If the regular-season champion also wins the tournament, the second automatic berth will go to the regular-season runner-up. We look forward to returning to the Butte Civic Center and continuing this championship tradition through 2029.
