Inaugural Frontier Conference Women’s Indoor & Track Championship set this weekend

The inaugural Frontier Conference Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championship is set to bring the conference’s top performers under one roof Feb. 21–22 at the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings, South Dakota, on the campus of South Dakota State University. With season leaders established across the sprints, distance races, relays and field events, the two-day meet will serve as the first true head-to-head test of conference supremacy indoors, with final team scoring and titles to be decided on the track and in the field.

On the track, the short sprints appear poised to run through Bismarck State’s (N.D.) Priviledge Bower, who enters as the season leader in both the 60 meters (7.52 seconds) and 200 meters (24.84 seconds). Dakota State’s (S.D.) RayLee Wallis owns the top listed time in the 400 at 58.55 seconds, setting up a potential showdown with the shorter sprint specialists. In the mid-distance group, Bismarck State’s Tsitsi Karanda headlines the 600 meters at 1:34.72, while Rocky Mountain’s (Mont.) Maya Pearcy leads the 800 with a 2:11.75 mark, putting both in position to anchor critical scoring opportunities as the meet progresses.

Bellevue’s (Neb.) Grace Steinmetz leads a deep distance contingent and could be a central figure in the team race. She sits atop the performance lists in the mile (5:03.59), 3,000 (10:01.49) and 5,000 (17:20.78), giving Bellevue options across multiple events as the schedule unfolds. Relay strength may also prove decisive: Bismarck State owns the top 4 x 400 relay time at 3:56.78, while Dickinson State (N.D.) leads the 4 x 800 at 9:32.96, positioning both programs to collect valuable late-meet points in the closing events.

In the field events, Dickinson State and Montana Tech feature prominently on the performance lists. Dickinson State’s Adarra Hagelund (1.76 meters - 5 feet, 9.25 inches) leads the high jump, while Carroll’s Brynn Wandle tops the pole vault at 3.85 meters (12 feet, 7.5 inches). Montana Tech’s Jadyn Vermillion enters as the long jump leader at 6.08 meters (19 feet, 11.5 inches), and Dickinson State’s Faith Brennan is out front in the triple jump at 12.28 meters (40 feet, 3.5 inches). Dickinson State also holds the top marks in the throws behind Kori Nagel, who leads the shot put at 15.35 meters (50 feet, 4.5 inches) and weight throw at 19.18 meters (62 feet, 11.25 inches), giving Dickinson State a strong foundation in multiple field-event disciplines.

Combined-event specialist Abby Clark of Montana Tech leads the posted pentathlon marks at 3,576 points, adding another key storyline as the conference’s best all-around athlete gets an early chance to deliver a major scoring block. According to the published schedule, prelims in the short sprints and selected relays are set for Saturday evening, with a full day of field-event finals and remaining running finals Sunday, including the mile, 60-meter hurdles, 60-meter dash, 600, 800, 200, 3,000 and 4 x 400 relay. While the performance lists identify clear contenders and season leaders heading into Brookings, final placings and the first set of Frontier Conference indoor champions will be determined by results posted over the course of the championship weekend. All events will be conference meet records after this weekend's meet. Dakota State currently maintains a slim 1-point lead over Montana Tech after the multi-events (13-12). Carroll is third with seven points in the team standings, followed by Dickinson State fourth with six points, and Valley City State (N.D.) fifth with one point. The two-day conference meet kicks off Saturday at 5 p.m. (Central Time) and continues on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT). Individual events scoring are set at 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 with the top eight place finishers, while the relay events will be scored 10-8-6-4-2-1 for top six relays place finishers. The awards presentation will be held at the conclusion of the conference meet Sunday afternoon.
