Kolter Merritt of the University of Montana Western has been named the Frontier Conference Grit Award winner in men’s basketball, an honor sponsored by the Montana Army National Guard. Announced for April 8, 2026, the award recognizes the resilience, service, discipline and teamwork that Merritt showed throughout his path to becoming a key piece of the Bulldogs program.

Merritt’s journey to this recognition was anything but straightforward. He arrived at Montana Western just weeks before the start of the academic year after originally planning to attend Colorado Mesa. That came after a difficult sophomore season at Northwest College in Wyoming, when he feared his playing career might be over. In his first year with the Bulldogs, he saw limited minutes early, then worked his way into the rotation and eventually into the starting lineup late in the season.

By the start of the 2025-26 season, Merritt had secured a starting role and helped fuel early team success, including a standout win over a top-ranked opponent. His season took another turn when he suffered a hip injury that was initially feared to be severe. Instead of fading from the lineup, Merritt attacked rehabilitation and returned to competition quickly, adding another chapter to the persistence that made him a natural fit for the conference’s grit award.

Though undersized for his position, Merritt built his value through effort, positioning and physical play. He became known for battling bigger opponents on the glass, especially on offensive rebounds, and for bringing steady energy and competitiveness on the court. The same approach showed up away from games, where coaches and others pointed to his preparation in the weight room and practice, his accountability in the classroom, and his volunteer work with youth and campus activities.

For the Frontier Conference, the honor is a celebration of the kind of player and person programs are proud to represent. Merritt’s story reflects the values tied to the award and to its sponsor, the Montana Army National Guard, and it stands as a reminder that persistence and service still matter deeply in college athletics.
