GATES MILLS, Ohio - Gilmour Academy opened its Varsity Boys Soccer season with a 5-0 home loss to Hawken on Monday night. Hawken’s five goals provided the difference as the Lancers were unable to convert their attacking chances in the Aug. 17 opener.

The Lancers leaned on their goalkeepers and defensive work throughout the match. Goalies Kevin and Evan Sammut combined for seven saves, helping Gilmour withstand additional pressure and keeping the team within reach. The goalkeeper totals also credited Kevin Moore with five saves and Evan Sammut with two.

Gilmour entered the match with a young lineup that included three sophomores and one freshman in starting roles. The opener gave those underclassmen early varsity experience against Hawken and provided the Lancers with their first test of the new season.

Although Gilmour finished without a goal, the seven-save performance in net highlighted the effort behind the ball. The Lancers will look to build on that defensive work while developing their possession and finishing following the season-opening setback.

Gilmour Boys Soccer will be back in action on Saturday, Aug. 22 at Central Catholic High School in Toledo. JV at 12:30 p.m. with Varsity to follow at 2:00 p.m.
