GATES MILLS, Ohio - Dominic Schaffer scored midway through the second half as Gilmour held off Cardinal Mooney 1-0 on Saturday afternoon, giving the Lancers their second shutout victory of the season. The decisive goal broke a scoreless tie after Gilmour controlled possession throughout much of the first half.

The Lancers finally converted that pressure when a precise pass from Julian Sweeney created the second-half scoring opportunity for Dominic Schaffer, who buried the ball in the net. Julian Sweeney was also credited for his work in the scoring sequence. The sophomore connection had produced a goal earlier in the season during a game in Toledo, and it delivered another key moment against Cardinal Mooney.

Gilmour’s defense protected the narrow advantage behind goalkeeper Kevin Moore, who made six saves and recorded his second shutout of the season. Cardinal Mooney generated chances despite the Lancers’ advantage in possession, but Kevin Moore answered each attempt and preserved the one-goal lead through the final whistle.

The result was especially important for a Gilmour lineup missing several regular contributors because of injuries and Labor Day weekend vacations. Coach Ciuni called the victory “very satisfying” as the available players handled expanded responsibilities and maintained their organization in a close match.

Gilmour improved to 2-4, with both victories coming by shutout. After applying pressure without a goal before halftime, the Lancers found the breakthrough in the second half and relied on another steady defensive performance to complete the 1-0 home win.

The Varsity Lancers are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Bedford.
