Gilmour Academy Lancers Fall to St Edward Eagles in Freshman Basketball Clash

In a challenging regular season basketball encounter, the Gilmour Academy Lancers faced off against the St Edward Eagles, resulting in a 64-48 defeat for the Lancers on January 11, 2025, at St Edward High School. Despite a promising start, the Lancers struggled to keep pace as the Eagles took control in the second quarter. The match began competitively, with only a slight edge for the Eagles at the end of the first quarter with a score of 12-10. However, the game shifted dramatically in the second quarter where St Edward outscored Gilmour by a significant 19-4 margin, setting the tone for the remainder of the game. Halftime scores reflected the uphill battle for the Lancers, trailing 31-14. Notably, Noah Hillman and Milan Makovits led the scoring efforts for the Lancers, contributing 13 and 10 points respectively. Supporting their efforts, Liam McCrone, Vinnie Konopka, Joe Goff, and Lorenzo Salvatore also made notable contributions with their performances, but the team could not surmount the Eagles' lead. Reflecting on the game, Coach Benisek shared, "I thought we competed until the end of the game, unfortunately you can't give really good teams like St Eds 2 and 3 opportunities per possession. We really struggled in the second quarter today, it was 10-12 St Eds after one, we actually outscored them in the second half. It goes to show how capable we are of competing with these big schools, but we have to be more consistent with our play." Looking ahead, the Lancers are set to tackle their next challenge against Medina at Medina High School on January 14, 2025. As they prepare, the team holds a current season record of 5-6, hopeful to turn around their fortunes in the upcoming games.
