Gilmour Academy Lancers Narrowly Edged Out by Medina in Hard-Fought Basketball Contest

Matt Benisek | Gilmour Academy | Jan 15, 2025

In a gripping encounter at Medina High School on January 14, the Gilmour Academy Lancers faced off against the Medina Bees in a closely contested regular season basketball game. The freshman team from Gilmour Academy showed tenacity but ultimately fell short with a final score of 46-44 in favor of Medina.

The game was tightly contested from the start, with Gilmour leading at halftime with a score of 20-16. However, Medina overcame the deficit in the second half. Gilmour's players, Noah Hillman, Vinny Konopka, and Milan Makovits, led the scoring, contributing 15, 13, and 9 points respectively. Additionally, Liam McCrone added 7 points to the team's tally. A pivotal moment came when Vinny Konopka sank a three-pointer with just 30 seconds remaining, tying the game at 44, raising the hopes of a Gilmour victory.

Coach Benisek reflected on the team's performance, stating, "I just didn't feel that we made enough plays to win the game tonight; we keep talking about playing a full 28 minutes of GA basketball. It's a learning process, we're in a good spot, just have to keep getting better each day." He emphasized the importance of the learning experiences gained through such tightly contested games and the need for the team to improve continuously.

The Lancers will look to rebound from this narrow defeat in their next game, hosting Cleveland Rhodes at Gilmour Academy on January 16. With a current team record of 5-7, the Lancers are eager to get back on track and showcase the full potential of Gilmour Academy basketball.
