Gilmour Academy Soccer Triumphs in District Semi-Final with a Record-Breaking Shutout

Joe Ciuni Sr | Gilmour Academy | Oct 24, 2024

In an outstanding display of skill and teamwork, Gilmour Academy's soccer team, the Lancers, dominated the District Semi-Final against Lincoln West with a resounding 8-0 victory on October 23, 2024, at their home ground. This win not only advances them in the tournament but also sets a new school record for goalkeeper shutouts in a season. From the onset, the Lancers showed their prowess as Carter Richmond scored the opening goal just 19 minutes into the first half. The team continued their relentless attack, adding four more goals in the next 15 minutes, effectively seizing control of the game by halftime with a score of 5-0. Richmond finished the game with a hat trick, leading the scoring alongside notable contributions from Evan Saline with two goals, and PJ Kunchik, David Kleyner, and Brady Benisek each adding one. Notably this was Brady’s first goal of his high school career, coming out of the net to score the 3rd goal on a penalty kick. Goalkeeper Brady Benedek was instrumental in ensuring Lincoln West was unable to find the back of the net, culminating in his 11th shutout of the season—a new school record. The Gilmour Academy coach lauded the effort, stating, "Well played game by the boys. We achieved our goal, keeping our composure during this very physical match and we escaped without injuries." Such performances emphasize team coherence and individual excellence, propelling the Lancers forward. Looking ahead, Gilmour Academy prepares to face Norwayne High School in the District Finals match on October 26, 2024, at Louisville High School. With a season record of 15-2-1, Norwayne is the higher seeded team and another high scoring opponent who will challenge the Lancer defense. The Lancers record is now 13-2-4.
