Girls Varsity B Tennis Falls 4-1 to Mayfield in Season Opener

Gilmour Academy opened its season with a 4-1 home loss to Mayfield on Friday, Aug. 14. The Lancers earned their point with a commanding performance at No. 3 singles, while Mayfield claimed the other two singles matches and swept the doubles competition.

The No. 3 singles result provided the highlight for Gilmour from Lizzy Savron. The Lancers won the match 6-1, 6-1, controlling both sets to prevent a Mayfield sweep. The straight-set decision was Gilmour’s only match win of the day.

At No. 1 singles, Julia Aziz responded to a difficult opening set with a competitive second set. Mayfield secured the match 6-1, 6-4, but Aziz’s improvement gave the Lancers a chance to extend the contest. Ellie Deering competed at No. 2 singles and fell 6-3, 6-1.

Gilmour’s closest doubles result came from Olivia Garcia and Miki Iskra at No. 2. The pair captured a tightly contested opening set 7-6 before Mayfield answered with a 6-3 second-set victory and received the team point. That opening-set win represented the strongest stretch of doubles play for the Lancers during the home opener.

At No. 1 doubles, Liv Slocum and Hannah Fouad faced steady pressure from Mayfield and lost 6-1, 6-1. Although the Lancers did not secure a doubles point, the No. 2 pairing’s first-set performance and the decisive No. 3 singles victory gave Gilmour positive moments to build on after its first match of the season.
