CHESTERLAND, Ohio - Gilmour Academy advanced its No. 1 singles player and No. 1 doubles team to the sectional semifinals Wednesday, Sept. 30, in OHSAA Division II sectional tennis competition at Hawken Upper School. Maeryn Ryznar and the doubles pairing of Grier Peckham and Abigail Lynch each improved to 2-0 in tournament play, winning both of their matches 6-0, 6-0.

Ryznar put together a perfect opening stretch in the singles draw, completing two straight-set victories without dropping a game. The freshman won all 24 games across those matches to secure a place in Saturday’s sectional semifinals. The consecutive shutouts gave Ryznar four set victories through the first two rounds.

Peckham and Lynch matched that performance in doubles, also sweeping four sets without conceding a game. Their two 6-0, 6-0 victories moved the Lancers’ No. 1 pairing into the semifinal round and kept Gilmour represented in both singles and doubles heading into the final day of sectional play.

Gilmour’s No. 2 doubles team of Savannah Drew and Sara Thompson lost 6-0, 6-0 and will not advance. That result ended their sectional run, while Ryznar, Peckham and Lynch continued through the bracket. The advancing entries combined for four match victories, with each winning by the same straight-set score.

Sectional semifinals and finals are scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, back at Hawken Upper School, with district competition next on the postseason schedule.
