GATES_MILLS, Ohio - Gilmour Academy scored twice in the opening three minutes of the second half to defeat Midview 4-1 at home Wednesday, Oct. 21, in the OHSAA sectional final. The victory sent the Lancers into the district semifinals.
David Kleyner made an immediate contribution in his return to the lineup after a three-week absence due to injury. He scored the Lancers’ first-half goal off an assist from Dominic Schaffer, beginning a productive night for the pair. Kleyner finished with two goals and an assist, matching Schaffer’s offensive output. Gilmour and Midview were tied 1-1 at halftime.
Their partnership produced another goal less than a minute after halftime, when Schaffer scored with Kleyner providing the assist. About two minutes later, Schaffer was tripped inside the penalty area, giving the Lancers a penalty kick. Kleyner converted it for his second goal of the match, completing the quick two-goal burst before Midview could settle into the second half.
Schaffer rounded out Gilmour’s scoring with his second goal, this time assisted by goalkeeper Kevin Moore. Moore also contributed at the other end of the field, making five saves as the Lancers held Midview to one goal. Gilmour plays the winner of CVCA and Madison in their next contest Thursday, Oct. 29, in the district semifinal.
