Lancers Earn Six Wins on Opening Day of Sectional Tournament

CHESTERLAND, Ohio - Gilmour Girls Tennis earned six individual-match victories on the opening day of the OHSAA Division II Sectional Tournament on Tuesday, September 29, at Hawken Upper School. Maeryn Ryznar won twice without dropping a game in singles, while Savannah Drew and Sara Thompson surrendered just one game across two doubles victories as the Lancers prepared for Wednesday’s finals.

Ryznar delivered two decisive performances at No. 1 singles, winning both the first- and second-round matches 6-0, 6-0. Those results gave Ryznar 24 games won without a game lost and a place in the next day’s finals. The singles success complemented a doubles effort that produced four victories across the Lancers’ three entries.

At No. 2 doubles, Drew and Thompson opened with a 6-0, 6-0 victory before taking their second-round match 6-0, 6-1. The pair won 24 of 25 games across the two rounds, giving Gilmour another strong performance heading into the finals. Their second-round victory was the Lancers’ only winning match of the day in which an opponent took a game.

Abigail Lynch and Grier Peckham added a 6-0, 6-0 first-round win at No. 1 doubles. Scarlett Greer and Naya Hilal matched that result in their opening match at No. 3 doubles, giving every Gilmour doubles entry a straight-sets victory to begin tournament play. Greer and Hilal then lost their second-round match 6-0, 6-3.

Five of Gilmour’s six victories came by 6-0, 6-0 scores, with Ryznar and the Drew-Thompson pairing each contributing two wins. The Lancers will look to keep the momentum going in tomorrow's sectional finals with a 3:30 p.m. start at Hawken Upper School.
