GATES MILLS, Ohio - Gilmour Girls Tennis fell to rival Orange 3-2 in the OTCA regional championship Monday, October 5, in Gates Mills despite straight-set singles victories from Grier Peckham and Maeryn Ryznar. The Lancers claimed two of the three singles matches, but Orange won both doubles matches to secure the championship.
Peckham delivered a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles, dropping just two games across the two sets. Ryznar added a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. Those performances supplied the Lancers’ two team points, with neither player needing a third set to finish the match.
At No. 1 singles, Abigail Lynch recovered from a 6-0 opening-set loss to push the second set to 12 games before falling 7-5. Lynch’s tighter second set highlighted the hard-fought nature of a regional final decided by a single team point, though Orange ultimately took the singles match in straight sets.
The doubles results provided the difference. Savannah Drew and Sara Thompson lost 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Scarlett Greer and Lynn Talty fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. Combined with the result at No. 1 singles, those victories gave Orange the three points needed to edge the Lancers.
The narrow defeat brought the Lancers’ regular season to a close and shifted their focus solely to the OHSAA postseason. Ryznar will compete in singles at the district tournament, while Peckham and Lynch will pair up in doubles after each played singles against Orange.
The Lancers will look to bounce back in their next contest at the OHSAA District Tournament on Friday, Oct. 9, and Saturday, Oct. 10.
