CLEVELAND — Behind two sectional championships and a podium relay, the Gilmour Academy Lancers men’s swimming and diving team placed third with 240 points at the Division II sectional meet Friday at Cleveland State University.
Gilmour rode a combination of sprint speed and breaststroke strength to secure its top-three team finish in a deep field that included Gates Mills Hawken, Hathaway Brown, Mentor Lake Catholic, Beachwood, University School and Chagrin Falls. The Lancers stayed in contention throughout the meet and ultimately claimed third place behind a pair of standout individual swims and a high-scoring relay performance.
Luke Woodhouse led the way for the Lancers with a sectional title in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching first to secure one of the meet’s marquee wins on the boys side. Woodhouse’s performance in the breaststroke not only delivered maximum points but also capped a strong day in which he played a key role in both individual and relay events. His win positioned Gilmour firmly in the top tier of the team standings as the meet moved into the final events.
Sprinter PJ Koerwitz matched that impact in the 50-yard freestyle, racing to a sectional championship in one of the fastest and most tightly contested events of the evening. Koerwitz’s victory in the 50 free added another event win to the Lancers’ total and highlighted the team’s strength in short-distance speed. The combination of Woodhouse’s breaststroke title and Koerwitz’s sprint free crown gave Gilmour two individual event winners in the same sectional meet.
Gilmour also earned a critical relay podium finish in the boys 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of Patrick Conway IV, Woodhouse, Colton Cutwright and Koerwitz placed second in the event, giving the Lancers another major point haul against some of the top programs in the region. The relay’s runner-up finish underscored the balance of the lineup, with Conway opening in the backstroke, Woodhouse handling breaststroke, Cutwright swimming butterfly and Koerwitz anchoring in freestyle.
Throughout the meet, those key swims helped the Lancers remain competitive in the team race despite powerful showings from Hawken and Mentor Lake Catholic, which combined strong individual efforts with multiple winning relays. While Hawken’s Everett Losch set sectional records in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke and Mentor Lake Catholic controlled the boys freestyle relays, Gilmour answered with its own event titles and top-three finishes to lock down third place overall.
The third-place finish at sectionals, highlighted by Woodhouse’s 100 breaststroke win, Koerwitz’s 50 freestyle title and the second-place medley relay, positions the Lancers well heading into the district meet. With momentum from two individual championships and a proven relay unit, Gilmour will look to carry its strong sectional performances into the next round of postseason competition.
Boy District Qualifiers Patrick Conway VI, Luke Woodhouse, Colton Cutwright, PJ Koerwitz, Andrew Varanese, Ryan Panzica, JJ Cistone, Ben McAuley, Julian Stankus, and Ayden Smelko
