Lancers Rally From Two-Goal Deficit to Tie Akron North 2-2
AKRON, Ohio - Gilmour Academy (4-7-1) rallied from an early two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 road draw against Akron North (6-3-3) on Thursday, October 1, in Akron. Julian Sweeney scored the first-half equalizer after senior Neil Turner started the comeback, helping the Lancers recover from a difficult opening stretch.
Akron North entered the match at 6-3-2 and presented a challenging matchup with its possession-oriented attack. The hosts took a 2-0 lead within the first 15 minutes, converting a penalty kick following a foul in the box and adding a breakaway goal two minutes later. That quick sequence left the Lancers needing a response.
Turner supplied the first goal, finishing with an assist from Ben Grossner to cut the deficit to 2-1. Sweeney then brought the Lancers level with a goal assisted by Dominic Schaffer. The two scoring combinations erased Akron North's advantage before halftime, turning an early two-goal hole into an even match heading into the break.
Neither team scored in the second half, leaving the first-half rally as the difference between a loss and a draw for the Lancers. Goalkeeper Kevin Moore finished with four saves. Gilmour conceded no additional goals after Akron North's early burst, holding the hosts at two through the remainder of the match.
Turner and Sweeney each finished with one goal, while Grossner and Schaffer each contributed one assist in the comeback. The Lancers will look to bounce back in their next contest on Saturday, October 3, when they host West Geauga on Senior Day.
