No. 3 Singles Comeback Highlights Lancers’ 4-1 Loss to St. Joseph Academy

Gilmour Academy’s Girls Varsity B tennis team earned its point through a three-set comeback at No. 3 singles but fell 4-1 to St. Joseph Academy on Monday, Aug. 31, at home. St. Joseph won two of the three singles matches and swept doubles on a partly cloudy afternoon with a match-time temperature of 79 degrees.

The Lancers’ victory came at No. 3 singles, where Olivia Garcia recovered after dropping the opening set 6-0. Garcia responded with a 6-4 victory in the second set, then completed the turnaround by winning a closely contested final set, 7-5. It was Gilmour’s longest and most competitive singles match of the day, producing the team’s lone point.

Gilmour also stayed competitive at No. 2 singles. Hannah Fouad challenged the St. Joseph opponent in both sets before losing 6-4, 6-4. At No. 1 singles, Julia Aziz was defeated 6-0, 6-0. Those results gave St. Joseph a 2-1 advantage across the three singles matches.

The Lancers opened No. 1 doubles with one of their strongest stretches of the match. Ellie Deering and Lizzy Savron took the first set 6-1, putting Gilmour in position to add another team point. St. Joseph answered in the second set, winning 6-1, before taking the deciding set 6-3. The three-set loss gave St. Joseph its first doubles point after Gilmour had established the early lead.

At No. 2 doubles, Liv Slocum and Miki Iskra continued to battle after a 6-2 opening-set loss. The Gilmour pair improved in the second set but fell 6-3, allowing St. Joseph to complete the doubles sweep and secure the 4-1 team result. Gilmour finished with one singles victory and no doubles points, with the comeback at No. 3 singles and the opening-set win at No. 1 doubles providing the Lancers’ top moments.

Girls Varsity B Tennis will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 1, hosting Highland at the Lancer Tennis Courts at 4:30 p.m.
