Sweeney Breaks Through as Gilmour Academy Blanks Central Catholic 2-0

TOLEDO, Ohio - Sophomore Julian Sweeney knocked home a rebound with 17 minutes remaining to break a scoreless tie, sending Gilmour Academy to a 2-0 victory over Toledo Central Catholic on Saturday, Aug. 22. Senior captain Dave Kleyner added an insurance goal 10 minutes later as the Lancers converted two second-half chances after a long weather delay.

Gilmour opened slowly while adjusting to a revised lineup without junior captain PJ Kunchik, who out due to an illness. Twelve minutes into the match, lightning and thunder suspended play for more than an hour. The Lancers created several opportunities after play resumed, but Toledo Central Catholic kept them out of the net through halftime.

Threatening skies remained over the field during the second half, though play continued without another stoppage. Gilmour increased the pressure and finally found the breakthrough when Julian Sweeney pounced on a rebound with 17 minutes left. Sophomore Dominic Schaffer received the assist on the match-winning goal.

The Lancers put the match away with seven minutes remaining. Dave Kleyner finished Gilmour's second goal, again from an assist by Dominic Schaffer, giving the sophomore assists on both second-half scores.

At the other end, junior captain Duncan Nakhooda anchored a disciplined defense that Toledo Central Catholic could not penetrate. Sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Moore completed the clean sheet, recording his first shutout of the season as Gilmour finished the weather-interrupted trip to Toledo with a 2-0 win.
