GRAFTON, Ohio - Julian Sweeney converted a free kick from just outside the penalty area with nine minutes remaining Saturday, lifting Gilmour Academy to a 2-1 comeback victory over Midview. The Lancers scored twice in the closing 16 minutes to earn their third straight win after falling behind early in the second half.

The teams played through a scoreless first half before Midview broke the tie 10 minutes after halftime. The hosts continued to apply pressure, but goalkeeper Kevin Moore kept Gilmour within one goal. Moore finished with a season-high seven saves, providing the Lancers an opportunity to mount their late response.

Dominic Schaffer pulled Gilmour even with 16 minutes to play. PJ Kunchik set up the equalizer, recording the assist as Schaffer finished the chance to make it 1-1. Seven minutes later, the Lancers earned a free kick just outside the Midview penalty area, and Sweeney delivered the decisive strike for a 2-1 lead.

Gilmour’s defense protected the advantage through the final nine minutes. David Kleyner anchored the back line, which prevented Midview from putting another shot on goal after Sweeney’s go-ahead score. That closing stretch completed a strong defensive response after Midview’s early second-half breakthrough.

The combination of Moore’s season-best performance, two late goals and a composed finish allowed the Lancers to turn a one-goal deficit into another victory. After being held scoreless through the opening half, Gilmour found its breakthrough when Schaffer and Kunchik connected, then secured the result on Sweeney’s late set piece.

With the victory, the Lancers extend their winning streak to three games. The return to the field Thursday, Sept. 17 hosting Painesville Harvey.
