Varsity A Tennis Claims Two Singles Wins in 3-2 Loss to Orange

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio - Gilmour collected straight-set victories from Grier Peckham and Maeryn Ryznar before falling 3-2 to defending state champion Orange on Thursday. The Lancers earned both of their points in singles play during a closely decided dual match in Pepper Pike.

Peckham delivered a commanding performance at No. 2 singles, defeating the Orange entry 6-2, 6-2. Peckham established control in the opening set and maintained the same margin in the second, giving Gilmour one of the two points it needed to keep the team result tight.

Ryznar added another straight-set victory at No. 3 singles. After taking the first set 6-3, Ryznar strengthened the advantage in a 6-2 second set to secure the Lancers’ other team point. At No. 1 singles, Abigail Lynch faced a difficult assignment and lost 6-1, 6-2.

Orange secured the match by sweeping the two doubles contests. Savannah Drew and Naya Hilal dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision at No. 1 doubles, while Lynn Talty and Scarlett Greer fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. Those two points, combined with Orange’s win at the top singles position, provided the defending state champion with the narrow team victory.

Despite the loss, the Lancers left the match with two decisive singles results against a proven opponent. Peckham and Ryznar each completed their victories without requiring a third set, accounting for Gilmour’s two points and highlighting the team’s strength in the middle of the singles lineup.
