Varsity A Tennis Falls 3-2 Despite Two Singles Victories

Gilmour Academy earned two singles victories but dropped all three remaining courts in a 3-2 loss to Hathaway Brown on Tuesday. The Lancers received straight-set dominance at No. 1 singles and a three-set comeback at No. 2, but the opponent’s sweep of the doubles matches proved decisive.

Abigail Lynch delivered Gilmour’s most commanding result, winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Abigail Lynch controlled the match from the opening game, completed a first-set shutout and conceded only one game in the second set. Lynch also produced a dominant No. 1 singles performance by the same 6-0, 6-1 margin, setting the tone with consistent play from start to finish.

The Lancers’ other team point required a turnaround. At No. 2 singles, Grier Peckham recovered from a 6-4 loss in the opening set and rolled through the next two sets, winning each 6-1 to complete the comeback. Peckham similarly rallied after dropping an opening set 4-6, responding with consecutive 6-1 victories. The ability to reset after a difficult first set highlighted Gilmour’s strongest stretch of the match.

Maeryn Ryznar pushed the opening set at No. 3 singles before falling 7-5. The opponent carried that momentum into the second set and completed the match with a 6-2 win. The close first set gave the Lancers an opportunity to secure a third singles point, but the late games went against Gilmour.

In doubles, Savannah Drew and Naya Hilal lost 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 position. Sara Thompson and Lynn Talty competed at No. 2 doubles and fell 6-1, 6-1. Those two doubles results allowed Hathaway Brown to offset Gilmour’s success at the top of the singles lineup and secure the overall match.

Gilmour finished with two singles points, including a straight-set victory and a comeback win, while the doubles sweep supplied the difference in the 3-2 final.
