Gilmour's Girls Varsity B tennis team claimed a pair of three-set comeback victories before falling 3-2 to Highland on Tuesday at home. Hannah Fouad earned the Lancers’ point in singles, while Ellie Deering and Lizzy Savron teamed for a doubles victory in the closely contested match.
At No. 2 singles, Hannah Fouad recovered after dropping the opening set 6-4. Fouad answered with a 6-2 victory in the second set, then prevailed 12-10 in a tight decider. The turnaround gave the Lancers their only singles point and produced one of the match’s closest finishes.
The No. 1 doubles match followed a similar path. Ellie Deering and Lizzy Savron lost the first set 7-5 but responded by taking the second set by the same score. The Gilmour pairing then secured the team’s second point by winning a back-and-forth deciding tiebreak, 13-11.
Highland earned the remaining three points with two singles victories and one doubles win. At No. 1 singles, Julia Aziz fell 6-0, 6-1. Liv Slocum competed at No. 3 singles and dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision. In the No. 2 doubles match, Olivia Garcia and Mary Halscheidt were defeated 6-3, 6-0.
The final margin reflected the importance of the two extended matches. Gilmour’s victories required comebacks after first-set losses, and both were decided by two points in lengthy final tiebreaks. Highland’s three straight-set wins provided the difference, but the Lancers left the match with resilient performances from Hannah Fouad and the No. 1 doubles combination of Ellie Deering and Lizzy Savron.
