Gilmour Varsity B Tennis opened its NEOTA schedule with a 5-0 loss to Magnificat on Tuesday, Aug. 18, at home. Magnificat won all three singles matches and both doubles contests to secure the team victory in the Lancers’ first league match of the season.
Julia Aziz produced Gilmour’s strongest second-set improvement at No. 1 singles. After dropping the opening set 6-0, Aziz won two games in the second before falling 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Hannah Fouad battled to identical set scores, taking two games in each set of a 6-2, 6-2 defeat.
Magnificat also earned the point at No. 2 singles. Lizzy Savron represented the Lancers in that position and fell 6-0, 6-0. The three singles results gave the visitors control of the team score, but Gilmour’s lineup gained its first NEOTA match experience across all three positions.
In doubles play, Liv Slocum and Ellie Deering competed together at the No. 1 position. The pair won one game in each set of a 6-1, 6-1 loss. At No. 2 doubles, Mikki Iskra and Emmy Sell took a game in the opening set before Magnificat completed a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
The season-opening match established the Lancers’ singles and doubles order while providing a starting point for the NEOTA campaign. Julia Aziz’s two-game second set, Hannah Fouad’s consistent set scores and the games earned by both doubles teams highlighted Gilmour’s effort in the 5-0 home defeat.
The Varsity B team will look to bounce back on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at CVCA.
