MENTOR, Ohio - Gilmour Varsity Volleyball opened with a decisive first-set victory before Lake Catholic won three consecutive close sets to hand the Lancers a 3-1 loss in their season opener on Tuesday, Aug. 25. Gilmour took the opener 25-19, but Lake Catholic responded with victories of 26-24, 27-25 and 25-23 in a varsity match in which every late point carried weight.

The Lancers established their attack early and created the match's largest set margin in the opening frame. Lake Catholic answered in the second, but Gilmour stayed within striking distance throughout and pushed the set beyond the standard 25-point threshold before falling by two. That result evened the match at one set apiece and set the stage for another extended finish.

Neither side separated in the third set, which also required extra points. Gilmour continued to pressure Lake Catholic deep into the frame before dropping a 27-25 decision. The fourth set followed the same competitive pattern, with the Lancers again reaching the closing points within one rally of pulling even. Lake Catholic secured the match by taking the finale 25-23.

Ava Anders led Gilmour's offense with a team-high 16 kills and added two digs. Kyla Williams supplied 12 kills and one block, giving the Lancers another consistent option at the net. Aiden Pike contributed five kills, one dig and one block, while Mira Siebert directed the attack with 25 assists.

Although the final result went to Lake Catholic, the four set scores reflected how little separated the teams. The Lancers' opening-set win, balanced hitting and ability to extend two sets beyond 25 highlighted a competitive performance against a tough Lake Catholic team.

The Freshman and JV Volleyball teams both fell to the Cougars 1-2 and 0-2.

The Varsity Lancers are back in action this weekend competing in the Columbus Invitational Tournament on Friday, August 28 and Saturday, August 29.
