Unity Seats Brings Harris County Together for September 11 Tribute in Channelview

Before Channelview High School faced the Clear Creek Wildcats on Sept. 11, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office joined students, coaches, families and residents in Channelview for a moving tribute marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The pregame ceremony included a moment of silence for the nearly 3,000 people who died and recognition of the first responders and civilians whose courage came to define that day.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez stood alongside members of the Channelview community as part of the US United Unity Seats program. The initiative brought law enforcement leaders and residents from different backgrounds and viewpoints together at the high school football game, giving them a shared place to connect as neighbors rather than focus on their differences.

In the Unity Seats section, participants experienced the familiar sights and sounds of Friday night football together. Sitting side by side created space for conversation, reflection and connection amid the energy of the game. The setting offered a simple but powerful reminder that people do not need to agree on every issue to share respect, community pride and a common moment.

The Channelview gathering was part of a national tribute spanning nearly 100 high school football games. Harris County also joined events in Shanksville, New York City, Arlington and Los Angeles in passing a purple football to launch “Pass the Purple,” a campaign centered on visible acts of unity. Harris County Sheriff’s Office command staff participated in a related observance during Cy-Fair High School’s game against Cypress Springs.

Gonzalez said the sheriff’s office honors those lost on September 11 by serving with courage, compassion and commitment to one another. Unity Seats carried that message beyond the ceremony, showing how a football game can help bridge divides and strengthen relationships. For one evening in Channelview, remembrance, service and the shared spirit of the community brought residents and law enforcement together in the same seats, under the same lights and united in the same purpose.
