Kenilworth opened a doubleheader Wednesday at Memorial Field Park in Rocky River with their sharpest all-around performance of the season, beating McGintys 15-9 before falling 22-14 in the second game. The split was defined by two very different efforts, a breakout display at the plate and in the field in the opener, then a defensive struggle in the nightcap.
The first game turned on the Kenilworth offense and the work of starter Mike Sweeney, who looked in command throughout and gave the team a steady outing in the circle. Behind that pitching, Kenilworth backed him with what amounted to their best hitting and fielding game of the season. Fly-ball outs piled up against McGintys, which Kenilworth needs to fix up soon..... Matt Lally stayed hot adding a few hits as well. Matt Lally also had a strikeout, but probably had the most beer after the game.
At the plate, Kenilworth got thunder from several spots in the lineup. Finnbar Cooney delivered two home runs and supplied the biggest power surge of the day. Ryan Rosfelder and Mike DiFrancoadded another home run, Dillon Bandi also went deep, and Joseph Maloney chipped in a home run as well, giving the Crybabies a relentless attack across the doubleheader. One of the more memorable notes from the opener came from Finnbar Cooney, who hardly needed to run at all after repeatedly circling the bases on extra-base damage.
The second game swung the other way as McGintys broke through in a 22-14 win. The Crybabies still produced offense and stayed aggressive at the plate, but their outfield defense struggled to match the standard set in the opener. Multiple errors in the field from Peter Fitzpatrick, Joseph Maloney, Mike DiFrancoRyan Rosfelder and Shane Carrhelped extend innings, and McGintys took advantage of the extra chances to build the difference in the late game.
Even in the loss, the Crybabies showed the same ability to score quickly that carried them earlier in the evening. The split leaves the team with clear positives. First-game pitching, nice hitting, while also giving the Crybabies specific areas to clean up defensively before the next outing.
The next game now brings another point of interest for the Crybabies, with standout Matt sweeney set to take the mound for his first start. After a doubleheader that featured five reported home runs, a strong opening win, and a reminder of how quickly defense can shape a result, the Crybabies will look to carry their bats forward and tighten the field behind them.
