Benson/KMS athletes stack event wins and relay titles at Section 3A North Sub-Section

Benson/KMS turned in a big day at the MSHSL Section 3A North Sub-Section on Thursday at Montevideo High School, piling up eight event wins and two relay victories. The team was led by a dominant all-around performance from Carly Tolifson, a hurdles sweep from Ava Noble, and first-place finishes on the boys side from Miles Morrison, Conner Stine and the boys 4x100 relay.
Tolifson delivered one of the meetβs top efforts for Benson/KMS, winning the girls 100 meters in 13.02, the girls high jump at 4-11.00 and the girls long jump at 16-07.25. Noble was just as strong in the hurdles, taking first in the girls 100-meter hurdles in 15.40 and the girls 300-meter hurdles in 46.37. The team also got a relay title in the girls 4x100, where Julia Claussen, Noble, Kaida Helgenset and Tolifson crossed first in 50.04, breaking another school record in the event.
The boys produced plenty of highlights as well. Morrison won the boys 100 meters in 12.06 and also placed second in the boys 200 meters at 24.38. Stine claimed the boys 200 title in 24.06, and the Benson/KMS boys 4x100 relay of Darin Hippe, Cameren Silas, Morrison and Odin Shaw raced to first in 45.87. Silas added a third-place finish in the boys high jump at 5-06.00, while Isaiah Rosemeier cleared 10-04.00 for third in the boys pole vault.
Benson/KMS showed depth in the relays and distance events. The boys 4x200 relay of Michael Collins, Oswaldo Moreno, Mario Alvarez and Shaw placed sixth in 1:40.59, the boys 4x400 relay of Jordan Rodriguez, Alvarez, Gabe Lofgren and Ryder Bratsch took fifth in 3:58.06, and the boys 4x800 relay of Shane Froehlich, Wyatt Hoff, Lofgren and Coltan Hoberg finished sixth in 9:59.58. Hoff also posted a personal-best 11:39.41 to place sixth in the boys 3200, and Rodriguez added an 11th-place run of 1:00.63 in the boys 400.
B/KMS also picked up strong work in the girls distance races. Libby Henry placed third in the girls 1600 in 5:42.91, and Kayla Tollefsrud was third in the girls 3200 in 13:49.09. In the girls relays, Claussen, Sophie Krusemark, Shyla Woeste and Valeria Alvarez Cruz finished fourth in the 4x200 in 1:57.87, Helgenset, Layla Henry, Libby Henry and Porsha Gravley were fifth in the 4x400 in 4:43.92, and Libby Henry, Tollefsrud, Sydney Carlson and Gravley took fourth in the 4x800 in 10:46.03. Carlson also ran a personal-best 1:10.04 in the girls 400 for 10th, and Alvarez Cruz added a personal-best 30.58 for ninth in the girls 200.
In the field events, Owen Oerter turned in a standout double for Benson/KMS with second place in the boys shot put at 42-10.50 and second in the boys discus at a personal-best 136-07. Ryder Bratsch recorded a personal-best 18-02.50 for ninth in the boys long jump and added a 34-04.50 mark in the boys triple jump for 12th. On the girls side, Mamie Luft placed fourth in the girls discus at 98-11, Brianna Collins was ninth in girls discus at 81-08 and eighth in girls shot put at 27-01.25. With victories across sprints, hurdles, jumps and relays, Benson/KMS put together a well-rounded postseason showing in Montevideo.
MSHSL Section 3A Champions will be held next Thursday, May 28, at Pipestone Area High School.
