KMS/Benson placed third in the varsity boys competition and produced the top two individual finishes in the junior high girls race during a strong six-race showing Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the LQPV/DB Madison Invite. Alex Zurn and Levi Pappadackis led the varsity boys to 114 points, while Libby Henry and Porsha Gravley went 1-2 for the junior high girls at Madison Country Club. Numerous Fighting Saints runners recorded season-best and personal-best times across the meet.
The junior high girls opened the meet with an outstanding front-running performance in the 2,750-meter race. Henry won in 10 minutes, 53.37 seconds, and Gravley crossed second in 11:04.56. Kenzlee Peters placed 17th in 13:00.63, Meridith Huston was 20th in 13:21.63, and Kimberlynn Pownell completed the scoring group in 31st at 14:31.80. That combination gave KMS/Benson 34 points and second place, just two points behind Border West. Adisyn Goff also finished for the Fighting Saints.
In the junior high boys 2,750-meter race, Peyton O'Leary set the pace for KMS/Benson by placing 10th in 11:03.14. Atticus Goff followed in 24th at 12:16.59, and Rogan Klucas finished 37th in 13:19.18. Hudson Helgeson and Shane Loen rounded out the scoring five, with Loen's 14:14.73 securing the team's final scoring position. KMS/Benson finished fourth with 83 points, while Cooper Hatfield, Liam Ollendick and Graesyn Henkel added three more completed races.
Kayla Tollefsrud led the varsity girls over 5,000 meters, earning 18th place in 22:19.53. Cadence Holmquist was next in 32nd at 23:53.36, and KMS/Benson used a closely grouped finish from Ella Beyerl, Mamie Luft and Cora Doering to complete its scoring. Beyerl placed 45th in 24:59.62, Luft was 47th in 25:13.62, and Doering took 50th in 25:54.27. Audrey Loen finished 57th as the Fighting Saints scored 169 points and placed seventh among nine teams.
The varsity boys then delivered KMS/Benson's top team result of the day. Zurn placed 11th in 17:59.90, and Pappadackis stayed close to the front pack, finishing 13th in 18:11.12. Wyatt Hoff added a 21st-place finish in 18:48.62, giving the Fighting Saints three runners among the top 25. Cian Klucas placed 31st in 19:21.94, and Mason McGeary closed the scoring five in 42nd at 20:15.54. Gabe Lofgren finished only two places and 6.11 seconds behind McGeary, while Noah Barrett completed the team's seven-runner lineup.
That varsity boys pack combined for a team time of 1:34:37.12 and an average of 18:55.43. KMS/Benson finished behind Redwood Valley and Montevideo, neither of which competes in the Fighting Saints' conference or section. The team also held off Murray County Central/Fulda by nine points for third in the 12-team field, an encouraging result built on two front-pack finishes and steady scoring through the fifth runner.
The junior varsity races completed the meet. Sela Kolling led three KMS/Benson finishers in the girls 5K, placing 30th in 28:34.72. Valentina Calderas was 33rd in 30:40.88, and Miley Falcon finished 36th in 34:25.78. On the boys side, Shane Froehlich placed 21st in 21:56.18, followed by Jameson Klucas in 41st at 25:17.92. Although neither JV group had enough runners for a team score, their finishes added to a meet filled with personal progress, season-best efforts and a third-place varsity boys finish.
