The Fighting Saints junior varsity volleyball team fell 2-1 to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa on Monday, dropping a three-set match by scores of 22-25, 25-12 and 8-15. The Fighting Saints responded emphatically after a narrow opening-set loss, using strong serving and hitting to force the deciding set.
The opening set was the closest of the match. KMS stayed within striking distance throughout the frame, but Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa secured the final points needed for a 25-22 win. The three-point margin left the Fighting Saints looking for a sharper response as they moved into the second set.
That response came quickly. KMS took control behind sustained pressure from the service line and an effective attack, turning the second set into a 25-12 victory. The Fighting Saints’ serving limited Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa’s ability to settle into its offense, while strong hitting helped KMS finish points and build separation.
Sydney E. provided a key stretch with a serving run during the second set. Her work from the service line helped KMS maintain momentum as the Fighting Saints produced their most complete set of the match. The 13-point victory evened the match at one set apiece and sent the teams to a shortened third set.
Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa regained the advantage in the decider and closed out the match with a 15-8 win. Although the Fighting Saints could not carry their second-set control into the final frame, their serving run and decisive response after the opening loss showed the team’s ability to adjust within a match.
KMS returns to the road Tuesday, Sept. 29, for a 7:15 p.m. CDT match against Lakeview.
