KERKHOVEN, Minn. - KMS Schools fell 3-0 to the Lakeview Lakers in varsity volleyball Tuesday, September 29, in Cottonwood, but the Fighting Saints delivered strong blocking and determined defense in a competitive finish. Lakeview won 25-17, 25-23, 25-23, with the Saints pushing the final two sets to narrow margins.

The Fighting Saints opened the first set looking sharp before struggling to regain their rhythm after the first 10 points. Adjustments helped them find a more consistent game in the second set. Their blocking became a bigger factor, and stronger play across the floor helped them stay close before Lakeview took the set 25-23.

That fight carried into the third set. The Saints continued battling back and kept another tight set within reach, but a service error ended the match at 25-23. Although they couldn't extend the night to a fourth set, their improved consistency and repeated responses marked progress for the team.

Madison Silas led the attack with 13 kills and contributed four block assists and one solo block. Avea Finstrom found openings in Lakeview's defense for four kills, adding two block assists and one solo block. Raina Finstrom also recorded four kills as she continued to play with growing confidence. Kayleigh Finstrom supplied four block assists, helping make the Saints' net defense an important part of keeping the match competitive.

Behind that block, Emily Holtkamp covered the floor for a team-leading 18 digs. Silas added 12 digs, while Ira Gareis and Brooke Johnson finished with 11 apiece. Those defensive contributions complemented the stronger net play as the Saints battled through the final two sets.

Leah Wagner and Johnson directed an offense that became more consistent as the match progressed. Wagner finished with 13 assists, and Johnson added six. Ellie Van Heuveln came off the bench to provide solid serving and passing, giving the Saints another contribution beyond their starting group.

The close second and third sets, balanced defensive effort and growing individual confidence gave the Saints concrete positives despite the sweep. The Fighting Saints will look to bounce back in their next contest on Thursday, October 1, against the Canby Lancers.
