KERKHOVEN, Minn. - KMS/Benson finished fifth in the boys standings with 148 points and 11th in the girls standings with 272 points at the MSHSL Section 6A Cross Country Championships on Thursday, Oct. 29, at Vintage Golf Course. Kayla Tollefsrud earned a state berth with an eighth-place finish in 19:41.6. Alex Zurn led the boys in 13th place with a time of 17:12.6.

Tollefsrud, an eighth grader, secured the sixth and final individual qualifying spot after runners from the top two teams were removed from consideration. The top two teams and the next six individuals advance to state. Tollefsrud recorded the highest individual finish by a KMS/Benson runner in the two varsity races, both contested over 5,000 meters.

Zurn, a senior, and freshman Wyatt Hoff gave the boys two finishers among the top 20 in a field of 117 runners from 17 scoring teams. Hoff placed 17th in 17:35.6. Cian Klucas followed in 34th at 18:20.2, Gabe Lofgren finished 42nd in 18:40.8 and Mason McGeary took 52nd in 19:21.9 to complete KMS/Benson's first five.

The boys paired their fifth-place team result with improvements throughout the lineup. Every runner except McGeary recorded either a season best or personal best, while McGeary finished only a few seconds shy of a season best. Oswaldo Moreno rounded out the boys lineup in 63rd place at 19:33.7, just 11.8 seconds behind McGeary.

The girls finished one position short of their top-10 team goal in a field of 16 scoring teams and 118 finishers. Behind Tollefsrud, Ella Beyerl placed 56th in 23:10.8 and Cadence Holmquist finished 63rd in 23:25.1. Mamie Luft was 78th in 24:22.5, while Halle Bolduc completed the scoring five in 96th at 25:37.4.

KMS/Benson's final three girls crossed in consecutive places, separated by 13.1 seconds. Sela Kolling followed Bolduc in 97th at 25:42.1, with Cora Doering taking 98th in 25:50.5. Beyerl, Holmquist, Kolling and Doering are freshmen, while Luft and Bolduc are seniors.
