CANBY, Minn. - KMS/Benson earned one team championship and three additional team finishes Tuesday at the Canby-Minneota Cross Country Invite at Canby Golf Club. The girls won the 2,000-meter C Division with 22 points behind a sweep of the top three places, while the boys finished second in the varsity 5,000 meters with 51 points. The girls varsity team placed third with 76 points, and the boys C Division team took fifth with 105.
Libby Henry led the championship effort by winning the girls C Division race in 7 minutes, 53.3 seconds. Porsha Gravley followed in second at 7:56.4, and Alaina Lorenz completed the 1-2-3 finish in 8:19.8. Kenzlee Peters added a ninth-place finish in 9:10.3, and Angela Espinosa was 13th in 10:03.5. That front-running strength and scoring depth gave KMS/Benson an 18-point victory over runner-up Canby/Minneota. Flandreau placed third with 66 points.
The KMS/Benson boys used tight pack running to secure second place behind the South Dakota team of Flandreau in their first team matchup of the season against Camden Conference rival Canby/Minneota. Alex Zurn led the group in fifth place with a time of 18:18.7, and Wyatt Hoff crossed ninth in 18:40.3. Levi Pappadackis followed in 12th at 19:06.8, Mason McGeary was 14th in 19:17.9, and Cian Klucas completed the scoring in 17th at 19:22.4. Only 1 minute, 4 seconds separated the first and fifth KMS/Benson runners, helping the team finish 22 points ahead of third-place Canby/Minneota. Flandreau won with 31 points.
Kayla Tollefsrud paced the KMS/Benson girls varsity team, placing seventh in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 22:37.7, a personal best that cut nearly 1:30 off her time from last week. Cadence Holmquist and Ella Beyerl worked together through the field and finished one place apart, with Holmquist taking 14th in 24:28.2 and Beyerl placing 15th in 24:31.2, both cut over a minute off their prior week finish times. Cora Doering was 23rd in 25:48.0, and Mamie Luft rounded out the scoring group in 25th at 26:25.4. Canby/Minneota won the team title with 37 points, Flandreau was second with 56, and KMS/Benson followed in third with 76.
Atticus Goff led the KMS/Benson boys in the 2,000-meter C Division, finishing 18th in 9:16.8. Rogan Klucas placed 27th in 9:48.3, followed closely by Shane Loen in 28th at 9:52.2. Hudson Helgeson was 29th in 10:17.8, and Cooper Hatfield finished 30th in 10:58.4. KMS/Benson totaled 105 points, while Ortonville won the division with 32.
The meet was held under clear skies with a temperature of 74 degrees and a 7 mph wind. KMS/Benson produced numerous personal-best and season-best times across the four races. The varsity boys will continue working to bring all seven runners into a tighter pack while lowering times, building from a runner-to-runner scoring spread that proved decisive against a conference rival.
