KMS Falls to Paynesville in Three Sets Despite Late Push

PAYNESVILLE, Minn. - KMS fell to Paynesville in three sets Tuesday, dropping the varsity volleyball match 25-16, 25-20, 27-25. The Fighting Saints struggled to establish momentum in the opening set, then mounted stronger challenges in the final two before Paynesville closed out the sweep.
KMS lacked its usual focus and rhythm in the first set as Paynesville pulled away for a nine-point win. The Fighting Saints had difficulty producing sustained scoring runs, leaving them unable to gain the momentum needed to pressure the hosts. Paynesville capitalized and took the early match lead with a 25-16 result.
The Fighting Saints responded with a much sharper start in the second set. KMS attacked effectively, produced points and built a seven-point advantage during its best stretch of the match. Paynesville erased that deficit, however, as the Fighting Saints struggled to finish the set. The late turnaround gave Paynesville a 25-20 win and a two-set lead.
KMS stayed within reach throughout a tightly contested third set. The teams went back and forth until the final points, with neither side creating much separation. The Fighting Saints extended the set beyond 25 but could not complete the push, and Paynesville secured the match with a 27-25 victory. KMS had difficulty putting together a solid block against Paynesville's outside hitter in the closing stretch, while inconsistent defense and attacking prevented the Fighting Saints from converting their late opportunities.
Madison Silas led the KMS attack with 10 kills and also contributed two solo blocks. Leah Wagner recorded eight assists and four kills, using her ability to see the full court to help organize the offense. In the back row, Emily Holtkamp finished with 13 digs and provided steady serving with two aces.
Although the Fighting Saints could not turn their second-set lead or third-set push into a victory, the final two sets showed a stronger offensive response after the slow opening. Finishing scoring runs, strengthening the block and sustaining defensive execution will be central areas for KMS to build on following the three-set result.
