KMS Fighting Saints Shine at Region 6 Knowledge Bowl, Advance Two Teams to Super Regional
The KMS Fighting Saints made their mark at the Region 6 Knowledge Bowl tournament this week, turning a long day of buzzing in and fast thinking into a trip to the Super Regional. Competing in the 7th–9th grade division in Marshall, 12 KMS ninth graders took the stage, split into three teams: KMS Red, KMS White (fittingly nicknamed “Team Rocket”), and KMS Blue. By the end of the meet, KMS Red and KMS White had both punched their ticket to the Super Regional round, while KMS Blue finished just shy of the cutoff in a tightly contested field.
KMS Red – made up of Eero Nelson, Rex Nelson, Josh Freisen and Hayden Duke – led the Fighting Saints with a strong 5th-place finish overall, racking up 84 total points. That kind of score doesn’t happen without some quick buzzes and confident answers under pressure. Whether it was snapping up early toss-up questions or pulling through in the final minutes of a round, Red showed the consistency you want to see in a team that’s moving on to a higher level of competition.
Right behind them, KMS White, also known as Team Rocket – Quinn Rudningen, Alaina Fernelius, Pamila Kuhn and Kenia Zavala – finished 7th with 83 points, just one point off their Red teammates. That razor-thin margin tells you how competitive the meet was. White matched Red almost question for question, and their steady scoring kept them in the mix all day. When the final tallies were announced and Team Rocket’s name appeared among the qualifiers, the team had earned its shot at the Super Regional the hard way.
KMS Blue – featuring Magnus Nelson, Kendrick Wright, Brilen Meyers and Trevor Anders – wrapped up the tournament with a solid 67 points. While Blue missed the overall cutoff score for a Super Regional invitation, that total still reflects a lot of sharp thinking and quick reactions on the buzzer. At a meet where every bonus question and every early buzz can swing a round, Blue held their own and gained valuable experience that will pay off in future seasons. Sometimes the most important wins are the ones you build on later, and this group clearly laid a strong foundation.
In a competition built on speed and accuracy, the standout moments often come down to clutch answers in the final round, and KMS delivered plenty of those. Both Red and White finished with scores that put them safely in qualifying range, showing they could stay focused when the pressure ramped up. Those final-round pushes, where teams have to decide in a split second whether to buzz or wait, helped separate the Fighting Saints from the pack and secured their spots among Region 6’s best.
Now the attention turns to Thursday, Jan. 15, when KMS Red and KMS White will travel back to Marshall, this time to the campus of Southwest Minnesota State University for the Super Regional event. There, they’ll face top teams from Region 8 and see how their quick recall and teamwork stack up on an even bigger stage. Representing KMS will be: Rex Nelson, Eero Nelson, Hayden Duke, Josh Freisen, Quinn Rudningen, Alaina Fernelius, Pamila Kuhn and Kenia Zavala.
For the Fighting Saints, this Region 6 tournament was more than just a scoreboard. It showcased depth across all three teams, highlighted some impressive individual performances on the buzzer and set the stage for an exciting Super Regional appearance. Whether advancing on or just missing the cutoff, every KMS student walked away with more experience, more confidence and a clear sense that the program is heading in the right direction. And with two teams still competing, the story of this Knowledge Bowl season is far from over.
