KMS Saints Sweep Through Jimmy John’s Classic Volleyball Tournament with Unbeaten Streak
In an impressive display of skill and teamwork, the KMS Saints varsity volleyball team dominated the competition at the Jimmy John’s Classic Volleyball Tournament held at Marshall High School on October 4, 2024. The Fighting Saints showcased their unparalleled talent in a series of victories, defeating YME 2-0 in a hard-fought contest and then overpowering GFW, Springfield, Dawson-Boyd, and HMC with clean sweeps of 2-0 in each match, successfully clinching the tournament title. Standout performances were noted across the board, with Maddie Silas leading the scoring with a remarkable tally of 31 kills, closely followed by Maddie Luft with 30 kills and Emily Wagner contributing 17 kills. On the defensive end, Maddie Luft and Maddie Silas were monumental in blocking, registering a combination of solo and assisted blocks that pivoted the game dynamics in favor of the Saints. Luft posted 2 solo and 3 assisted blocks while Silas added another impressive solo and 6 assisted blocks. The backcourt was well-shielded thanks to notable digs from Ava Noble, Abby Holtkamp, and Emily Wagner, who recorded high digs of 52, 46, and 44 respectively. Serving prowess was demonstrated by Izzy Wirth and Emily Wagner, each racking up 8 aces, helping in crucial game moments to maintain the lead. Coach Ruf expressed admiration towards the team’s performance stating, "I have lots; first, our girls were so scrappy and didn’t let the ball drop. Our hitting was on point, and blockers did a great job of watching the ball to shut down opponents' hitters. We were firing on all cylinders, and it was great seeing all girls getting excited for each other." Looking forward, the Fighting Saints are set to confront the Ortonville Trojans on October 9, 2024, at Ortonville, aiming to improve their current season record of 8-13 and conference record of 2-7. The team's resolve remains unshaken as they prepare to carry their tournament momentum into the upcoming challenges of the season.
