KMS/Benson Schools at Cross Country Meet in Appleton Showcases Grit and Determination
At the picturesque course in Appleton, MN, the KMS/Benson Schools' cross country team displayed notable performances during the meet on August 28, 2024. Despite not having enough runners to score as a team, individual athletes rose to the challenge, especially commendable considering some were recovering from a race just two days prior. Among the standout individuals was Alex Zurn, who secured a 5th place in the Boys Varsity category, demonstrating his prowess amidst tough competition that included schools like B.O.L.D., MACCRAY/RCW, and Montevideo, among others. In the Boys JV, Zachary VanHeuveln and Owen Oerter finished strong at 6th and 9th places respectively, showing promise for future competitions. The junior high competitions also saw impressive performances with Levi Pappadakis, Mason McGeary, and Cian Klucas bagging top ten finishes for the boys, and Porsha Gravely, Libby Henry, and Audrey Loen doing the same for the girls. The meet was not just about racing; it was a display of resilience and spirit. Coach VanHeuveln highlighted the importance of the course and the energy at the event: "Appleton is always a nice course to get acquainted with what cross country is all about. Lots of good kicks at the finish line and grit throughout the race by all." This sentiment echoed the day's key moments where athletes, especially the 6th graders in their first races, showed significant determination and strength. Looking ahead, the Fighting Saints are set to participate in the WDC Johanna Olson Invite at Wadena - White Tail Run Golf Course on September 3, 2024, where they will continue to showcase their growth and teamwork in the season ahead.
