Viera West, Fla. — A dominant outing in the circle by Sarah Basket and a pair of late-inning rallies lifted Lawrence Tech to a 5-1 win over Trinity Christian (Ill.) in game one of Sunday’s doubleheader at a neutral site in Viera West, Florida.
The Blue Devils broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the fifth inning, then added two more in the sixth to give Basket more than enough support. The right-hander went the distance for a complete-game two-hitter, allowing just one earned run while striking out seven and walking one over 7.0 innings on 101 pitches.
Lawrence Tech finally broke through in the fifth after being held in check through four frames. Alexis Lana sparked the rally with one of her two hits on the day, setting the table for the middle of the order. With runners aboard, Alyssa Bloomfield ripped a two-run double to put the Blue Devils in front 2-0 and swing the momentum sharply in their favor. Moments later, Zoey Markey followed with an RBI double to left field, capping the three-run inning and giving Lawrence Tech a 3-0 cushion.
The Blue Devils kept the pressure on in the sixth. Basket helped her own cause by reaching base and later scoring on an RBI single from Jacqui LeBlanc to extend the lead to 4-0. Bloomfield then added more insurance with an RBI single, her third run driven in of the game, to make it 5-0 heading to the seventh.
Offensively, Lawrence Tech finished with eight hits and no errors while leaving seven runners on base. Bloomfield led the attack, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a double. LeBlanc reached safely in all three plate appearances, finishing 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk, and Lana turned in a productive day with a 2-for-2 line, a run scored and a sacrifice.
Trinity Christian was limited to just two hits and two runners left on base against Basket, finally breaking through in the seventh when Anna Lisa Fluder doubled in the Trolls’ lone run to cut the margin to 5-1. Trinity starter Peyton Lowden kept the game tight early, working 5.0 innings and allowing four hits and three runs while striking out one before Lawrence Tech’s bats broke through in the middle innings.
With the 5-1 victory in the opener, the Blue Devils set a strong tone for Sunday’s doubleheader, backed by efficient pitching, timely extra-base hits and clean defense in the field.
