Blue Devils Push No. 6 Marian Before Late-Inning Rally Leads to 11-7 Setback

VIERA WEST, Fla. — Lawrence Tech built an early four-run lead and held a 7-6 advantage through four innings, but No. 6 Marian (Ind.) used a four-run sixth inning to swing the momentum and went on to defeat the Blue Devils 11-7 on Saturday morning at the Space Coast Complex in the opening game of a Spring Games doubleheader.
The Blue Devils’ offense set the tone in the first inning, striking for three runs on a string of quality at-bats. Alyssa Bloomfield doubled to start the rally, Brenna Crittenden followed with a single to move her to third, and Bloomfield came around to score the game’s first run. Sarah Basket then drove a run-scoring double, and Sophia Propps added an RBI single to stake Lawrence Tech to a 3-0 lead against one of the top-ranked teams in the nation.
Marian answered with a six-run third inning to briefly take control, using a series of singles to flip the score to 6-3. Delaney Rundle, Abby Madere and Mati Hughes ignited the frame, with Ally Malone contributing an RBI single and Mallorie Beutel delivering a key two-run single to cap the outburst. The Blue Devils responded immediately in the bottom half, showing resilience by matching Marian’s surge with three runs of their own. Zoey Markey started the rally with a single and later scored on a Propps RBI single, and Ainsley Colman followed with a two-run double to left-center that pulled Lawrence Tech level and then in front, 7-6.
Lawrence Tech continued to apply pressure in the fourth. Natilee Pridemore drove a run-scoring double to extend the Blue Devils’ advantage to 7-6, capping a stretch of seven runs over the first four innings against a Marian staff that had entered the day in strong early-season form. Lawrence Tech finished with 12 hits, including four doubles, and left just five runners on base in an efficient day at the plate.
The decisive sequence came in the top of the sixth, when Marian regained control with another sustained rally. Madere, who finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, tied the game with an RBI double, and Lily Wendt drew a bases-loaded walk to push the Knights back in front. Beutel added another RBI as a run scored on an error, and Alyssa Donaldson followed with an RBI single to complete the four-run frame and make it 10-7. Marian tacked on an insurance run in the seventh on Malone’s RBI single to set the final margin.
Propps and Colman paced the Blue Devils’ offense against the nationally ranked Knights. Propps reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk, while Colman added a double and two RBI in three trips. Bloomfield’s leadoff double in the first and Pridemore’s RBI double in the fourth highlighted Lawrence Tech’s extra-base production, and Markey’s third-inning single helped key the Blue Devils’ answer to Marian’s early surge.
Despite the setback, Lawrence Tech’s performance against a top-10 opponent featured sustained offensive pressure and multiple lead changes that set a competitive tone for the Spring Break trip. The Blue Devils are scheduled to continue play at the Space Coast Complex later Saturday against Keiser University before resuming tournament action on Sunday.
