Lawrence Tech Pulls Away for 38-28 Victory in Home Opener

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - Lawrence Tech University scored 28 unanswered points after falling behind in the first quarter, taking the lead for good on a 66-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Schuster to Jaylen Johnson and defeating Saint Mary-of-the-Woods CollegeWoods College 38-28 on Saturday at Blue Devils Stadium. The victory came in the Blue Devils’ first home game of the season and the first football game at the university level for Saint Mary-of-the-Woods CollegeWoods College.
Franco Bella completed Lawrence Tech’s opening drive with a 35-yard field goal, but the teams quickly traded big plays. After Saint Mary-of-the-Woods CollegeWoods College moved ahead, Ryan Schuster connected with Owen Pittenger for a 60-yard touchdown. An 80-yard touchdown by the visitors put the Blue Devils behind 14-10, but the deficit lasted only 1 minute, 42 seconds. Ryan Schuster found Jaylen Johnson for the 66-yard score with 8:02 left in the first quarter, giving Lawrence Tech a 17-14 advantage it did not relinquish.
The Blue Devils added to the lead with a methodical 82-yard, 12-play drive in the second quarter. Jaylen Flowers finished it with an 11-yard touchdown run, sending Lawrence Tech into halftime ahead 24-14. Ryan Schuster accounted for four touchdowns overall, completing 21 of 30 passes for 341 yards and three scores without an interception while adding 33 rushing yards and a touchdown. Owen Pittenger made six catches for 141 yards, and Jaylen Johnson finished with four receptions for 97 yards.
Lawrence Tech’s defense created the pivotal break early in the third quarter. Tray'Vion Hunter forced and recovered a fumble at the opponent’s 16-yard line, and Ryan Schuster converted the short field with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Fisher. Tray'Vion Hunter finished with eight tackles, four tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, a recovery and two quarterback hurries. Later in the quarter, Ryan Schuster capped a 77-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 38-14.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods CollegeWoods College mounted a fourth-quarter response, scoring on a 43-yard touchdown reception by Joshua Murray with 11:26 remaining and a 6-yard run by Derron Hazzard with 1:50 left. That cut the margin to 38-28, but Lawrence Tech retained possession, with Jon Jasionowski helping secure the final first down before the Blue Devils ran out the clock. Jon Jasionowski led Lawrence Tech with 55 rushing yards on 13 carries.
The Blue Devils finished with 474 total yards, 26 first downs and no turnovers while converting 11 of 15 third downs. They held the ball for 32:20 and limited the visitors to 45 rushing yards. Lawrence Tech’s next scheduled game is on the road against Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) at 6 p.m. CDT Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026.
