VIERA WEST, Fla. — Lawrence Tech used a late offensive surge and a dominant start in the circle to close out an 8-0, six-inning run-rule victory over Bloomfield College on Tuesday morning at the Space Coast Complex in game one of the Blue Devils’ Spring Break doubleheader.
Lauren Miller powered the Blue Devils’ lineup with a pair of extra-base hits, including a game-breaking triple to start a five-run sixth inning that put the game out of reach. The middle infielder finished 2-for-3 with a triple, double, two RBIs and a run scored as Lawrence Tech pounded out 13 hits, stole five bases and played error-free softball.
Lawrence Tech grabbed the early lead in the second inning when Emmie Fowler came around to score on an RBI single to right-center from outfielder Alyssa Bloomfield. The Blue Devils doubled the advantage in the third and stretched it to 3-0 on Miller’s first big swing of the day, a two-run double that brought home Jacqui LeBlanc and Sophia Propps.
That early support was more than enough for starting pitcher Sydney Mayer. The right-hander worked 5.0 scoreless innings, scattering two hits with three strikeouts and just one walk. Mayer threw 54 pitches and allowed only three baserunners before turning the ball over to Mikayla Timm, who finished off the combined three-hit shutout in the sixth.
The Blue Devils broke the game wide open in the sixth. Miller led off with a triple to spark the decisive frame, then scored on an RBI single from second baseman Kiersten Chong to make it 4-0. Bloomfield followed with a run-scoring double, and Propps added an RBI single as the lineup continued to string together quality at-bats. LeBlanc then capped the inning — and effectively the game — with a two-RBI double to push the margin to 8-0 and invoke the run rule.
LeBlanc joined Miller and Bloomfield among the offensive standouts, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Bloomfield finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run, while Propps chipped in an RBI single during the sixth. At the top of the order, outfielder Brenna Crittenden set the tone in the first inning by drawing a walk and swiping both second and third, helping Lawrence Tech apply pressure on the bases from the outset as the Blue Devils finished with five steals.
Bloomfield’s starter, right-hander Jaida Hastin, went the distance in the loss, allowing eight runs on 13 hits over 5.2 innings with one strikeout. Bloomfield College managed just three hits against Blue Devils pitching and left three runners on base, while Lawrence Tech stranded eight but consistently produced in key situations to secure the shutout win in the opener of the Space Coast Spring games twinbill.
