Unity Builds Community Connections Under Friday Night Lights

South El Monte High School celebrated a Friday Night Lights victory over Garey High School on Sept. 11, 2026, in South El Monte. An energetic crowd of students, families, law enforcement personnel and community members shared the excitement, turning the varsity football game into an evening of school pride, remembrance and connection.

The Unity group brought together deputies from Temple Station, Temple Station Explorers, invited community guests, students, families and school representatives. Six tickets donated through the Unity Program provided seating for Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department personnel and their guests. The program creates common ground by bringing law enforcement leaders together with community members who may hold different viewpoints, allowing them to experience a game as neighbors rather than adversaries.

Before kickoff, the evening paused for a special 9/11 Memorial presentation honoring the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. Deputies from Temple Station stood on the field during the coin toss and the national anthem, which was performed by the South El Monte High School Band. The tribute brought the stadium together through a shared moment of remembrance and respect.

From their seats, LASD personnel and community members enjoyed the game together in a welcoming atmosphere filled with cheers and school spirit. Sitting side by side gave participants space for positive interaction while supporting the students on the field. Those connections strengthened the relationship between the sheriff’s office and the South El Monte community, showing how a shared experience can help bridge differences.

South El Monte’s victory provided a celebratory finish, but the impact reached beyond the final score. The event demonstrated how sports can unite law enforcement, students, families and community members through remembrance, respect and a common hometown spirit.
