Basketball Topples Mentor To Claim Second Straight District Championship

Magnificat Basketball triumphed against Mentor to claim their second consecutive OHSAA Division I District Championship. The Blue Streaks won the title by a final score of 53-31 at Valley Forge High School. As the game began, the Blue Streaks took a 27-16 lead going into the halftime. Magnificat secured the victory with exceptional defense - led by senior Brynn Roggenburk - in the fourth quarter where they outscored the Cardinals 16-3. Leading the way for Blue Streaks were junior Reese Roggenburk with 13 points and fellow junior Julia Hall with 12 points, They were backed up by teammates senior Katie Maryo who contributed 9 points (3 3-point field goals) and junior Sofia Wilson who finished with 8 points along with 6 assists & 4 steals. Sophomore Gemma Wichmann pulled down 10 rebounds. Reflecting on the game, Maryo emphasized the team's commitment to perseverance and improvement, saying, "It came down to owning up to our values and sticking with it. It feels good, but I want to go day by day and keep practicing hard so we can get better for the next rounds." Blue Streak Head Coach Danny Gallagher commended the team's resilience, stressing the significance of finding their rhythm throughout the game. "We just needed to settle in a little more. Our defense was still great, and we eventually settled in, got the ball inside and executed," he said. "We'll take a look at some stuff tonight, but we want to enjoy tonight as well. You have to soak in these moments and just keep being who we are." The victory elevated their season record to 19-6, and they now look ahead to their next challenge. A trip to the Sweet 16 is next as the team will face off against Brush in the OHSAA Division I Regional Semifinal on Tuesday, March 5th at 6:00pm at Medina High School.
