Blue Streaks Hold Strongsville Mustangs to a Draw

Peter Fitzpatrick | Magnificat High School | Aug 29, 2025

In a highly competitive regular season soccer match held on a perfect sunny afternoon on August 27, 2025, the Magnificat High School Blue Streaks varsity team fought fiercely to a 1-1 tie against the Strongsville High School Mustangs at Magnificat's home field. The game's first half saw no goals with both teams displaying strong defensive skills, leaving the halftime score at 0-0. The goalkeepers, Lydia Hamad for the first half and Abby Garcia for the second, played pivotal roles in keeping the Mustangs scoreless until the latter stages of the match. The deadlock was finally broken in the second half when Magnificat's Draya Sanders scored a remarkable left-footed shot from outside the box, assisted by Carly Dudek, placing the ball just over the Mustangs' goalie's head with only 12 minutes left. However, Strongsville quickly equalized less than two minutes later due to a deflection in the box that slipped past Garcia. Despite the tie, both teams had standout performances. Magnificat's overall team defense was solid, with significant contributions from Avery Bellack, Greta Trapp, Lily Young, Ava Blair, Moira Chambers, and Lexi Hradek. The Blue Streaks maintained their strong performance against a formidable opponent. The early season schedule has been one of the hardest schedules in the state. Every opponent has been undefeated at the time of the match, and that was no different tonight as Strongsville was 1-0. Coach of Magnificat expressed immense pride in the resilience and heart shown by the Blue Streaks, especially given the packed schedule of four games within a week: "I'm super proud of the girls...Our legs and minds were tired but our girls fought hard and played with a lot of heart...I'm proud of them."
