ROCKY RIVER, Ohio - Saturday, Oct. 10, ,Karnatz Family Field at Magnificat High. Senior Abbey Cupach gave the match an emotional start by stepping onto the field to take the opening kick. After tearing her ACL this past April, she has faced a challenging recovery that has tested her both physically and mentally. The moment was a meaningful milestone in that journey—and a joyful one for a senior class that has stayed close and supported each other throughout. Cupach’s return to the field, even for that opening kick, offered her teammates a chance to share in her progress and celebrate the strength it took to get there. That strength has been a hall mark of the senior class, and the team this year.
Magnificat ended up on the short end of a 1-0 match to Bay High School , with the visitors scoring the decisive goal well into the second half on senior night. Bay entered ranked among Ohio’s top 20 teams.
The teams played a scoreless first half, and both put pressure on the opposing goalkeeper during the closely contested match. The Blue Streaks kept Bay off the scoreboard until deep into the second half as Magnificat continued through one of the state’s hardest schedules.
Despite being unable to play at full capacity, Cupach has attended every team event, including practices, games, workouts and meetings. Her continued involvement has been a demonstration of senior leadership, with her teammates sharing in the moment as she led the way to begin the match.
Senior night celebrated a class of 13. Alongside Cupach, the seniors recognized included Annabelle Watson, Cate Yingling, Charly Pechota, Clara Mellino, Jayne Fitzpatrick, Kalli Sdrakas, Kealey Campbell, Lexi Hradek, Lydia Hamad and Margaret Kelley. The pregame ceremony also honored the seniors’ parents and other supporters.
Other parents hosted a pregame tailgate featuring food and drinks, adding another gathering for families before the senior recognition match. The Blue Streaks will look to bounce back in their next contest at Chagrin Falls on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
