Colwell Wins Two District Titles, Advances to State for Invaders
CLEVELAND — Normandy High School swimmer Blake Colwell delivered a historic performance at the OHSAA District Championships on Sunday at Cleveland State University, winning two individual district titles and punching his ticket to the state meet in both events.
Colwell became the first swimmer in Normandy history to claim a district championship, and he did it twice in the same session. The Invaders standout captured the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley, turning in personal-record times in both races to headline a strong showing for the Invaders men’s swimming and diving program.
In the 100 breaststroke, Colwell stopped the clock in 56.45 seconds, a lifetime best that secured the district crown and comfortably qualified him for the state championships. His swim combined a powerful opening 50 with a controlled finish, allowing him to separate from the field over the final 25 yards and touch first.
Earlier in the meet, Colwell set the tone with a championship swim in the 200 individual medley. He posted a personal-record time of 1:55.10, using a strong backstroke leg to move to the front of the pack before closing the race with a decisive breaststroke and freestyle finish. The performance locked up his second district title of the day and confirmed his advancement to the state meet in that event as well.
Colwell’s double victory provided a major milestone for Normandy, marking the first time an Invaders swimmer has stood atop the district podium—and doing so in multiple events in the same championship. His pair of PRs also reflect steady progression through the postseason, building on results from sectionals and positioning him as a contender at the state level.
The Invaders’ performance at districts capped an important step for the program, showcasing the top-end talent developing in the Normandy lanes. With Colwell advancing in both the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM, the Invaders will now turn their focus to state preparations, looking to translate district success onto the biggest stage of the season.
