Invaders Women’s Wrestling Places Fifth at OHSAA Sectional Tournament
Avon Lake, Ohio – Normandy High School’s Invaders Women’s Wrestling program turned in a strong showing at the OHSAA Sectional Tournament on Monday in Avon Lake, earning a fifth-place team finish behind multiple podium performances and a third straight sectional title from standout Brooke Yontosh.
Yontosh headlined the Invaders’ day by capturing her third consecutive sectional championship, solidifying her status as one of the program’s most reliable postseason competitors. Wrestling in the light weights, Yontosh navigated her bracket with poise and consistency, adding another gold medal to her resume and providing crucial points toward the team total. Her performance set the tone for Normandy’s lineup and anchored the Invaders among the top teams in a deep sectional field.
Normandy also received key contributions from several wrestlers who battled through their brackets to reach the podium. Miyah Makoski and Salarah Issa each finished in fourth place, surviving multiple elimination bouts to stay in contention deep into the tournament. Their efforts in the consolation rounds added important depth scoring for the Invaders, helping secure the overall fifth-place finish.
Isabella Bonelli closed her tournament with a fifth-place result, demonstrating resilience after early-round setbacks. Bonelli wrestled back through the bracket to secure a placement match and came away with additional team points that helped widen Normandy’s margin over programs chasing from behind in the standings. Her ability to respond late in the day underscored the lineup’s overall competitiveness.
In the upper placements, Layla Simmons delivered one of the Invaders’ strongest performances of the tournament with a third-place finish. Simmons advanced deep into her bracket and rebounded from any setbacks with solid efforts in the consolation rounds, ultimately climbing onto the podium in the top three. Her result, combined with Yontosh’s championship and the other placewinners, gave Normandy a balanced scoring presence across multiple weight classes.
With one sectional champion, multiple top-four finishers, and a fifth-place team result, the Invaders Women’s Wrestling team left Avon Lake with momentum and tangible postseason success. The performances of Yontosh, Makoski, Issa, Bonelli and Simmons highlighted the growth of the program and positioned Normandy for continued progress as qualifiers move on to the next stage of the OHSAA postseason.
Clear, cold conditions outside at 175 Avon Belden Road stood in contrast to the intense action inside, where the Invaders demonstrated depth, resilience and the ability to compete across the lineup in a high-stakes tournament setting.
